MOTS-C (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-C) is a mitochondrial-derived peptide consisting of 16 amino acids encoded by the mitochondrial genome. It was first identified in 2015 and represents a new class of signalling molecules — mitochondria communicating directly with the nucleus and other cellular compartments.
Published research has investigated MOTS-C in the context of metabolic regulation, exercise physiology, and ageing. Studies report that MOTS-C activates AMPK, regulates glucose metabolism, and may influence cellular stress resistance. It has been found to decline with age and is the subject of growing research interest as a potential biomarker and research tool in the ageing field.
MOTS-C is one of the most exciting recent discoveries in mitochondrial biology and represents an entirely novel class of research peptide distinct from traditional synthetic compounds.
